Sherman Court

In 2021 we bought a 1950 ranch from a family friend, in the town my family grew up in. It needed a lot of work, yet we could easily visualize how to bring it up to date and make it better. We spent that first Summer doing major remodeling, then moved in and kept going — living in the parts that were done while we chipped away at the rest.

The house had good bones, but we updated basically everything:

• the interior layout
• electrical (and electrical service)
• plumbing
• kitchen
• bathroom
• driveway
• exterior entryways
• insulation (abated asbestos in the attic)
• sewer line
• siding
• windows
• doors
• flooring
• trim
• paint
• lighting
• water heater
• roof and gutters (helped by a major hail storm)
• and finally landscaping

Most everything we took out couldn’t be saved, aside from countless curbside giveaways, but we did keep a vintage picture window that found a second life as the end window in the new shop. We also still use some of the original owners mid-century furniture pieces.

This house, the shop, and a subsequent bed/bath addition has eaten up or been the source of nearly all Human Crafted making efforts since the purchase, a side effect or benefit depending on how you look at it. It’s been a rewarding process, and almost certainly not the last.
